Best of Vienna: Indian Food

I don’t know about you but I love Indian food. Love it.

The flavors are intense, the food is fresh, no junk…. and the best part? Gluten free? Vegan? Vegetarian? No problem!

I can ALWAYS find food at an Indian restaurant because a traditional curry does not have wheat. The papadam (“bread” pictured above) is made from lentil flour and almost always an option.

Now, I wouldn’t be able to call myself a foodie if I did not know where to find the best Indian food! But I do.

Let’s summarize: best lunch? La Boheme; best ice cream? Veganista; best market? The Freyung organic market.

Best Indian? Arjuna. Hands down.

Every single time I eat here I dream about the curry for days after. My mouth waters at the thought! They are so succulent. Just fresh and flavorful.

I always see a nice little old Indian lady cooking in the kitchen when I am there. It’s like having your grandmother make you the good stuff- if you were Indian which sadly I am not. So off to Arjuna I go and I never regret it!

The restaurant itself is small and cozy. Yppenplatz is a lovely area and actually has two places in the “best of Vienna” category. The downside is that it is in the 17th (border 16th) and to be honest, the walk over there from the ubahn is creepy at night. Maybe take a friend.

And the split the rice pudding- because it will knock your socks off!

Btw. This is also the best budget Indian food in Vienna. The plate at the top of this post is 7,50€!

So there you have it folks. The best Indian food in Vienna.

Ding Dong! Delivery!

*image

Switching to a healthier lifestyle is simple if one merely looks at the concept:

Step 1: Get rid of junk food in the house.

Step 2: Don’t buy it again! Go to a healthier store and buy fresh food.

Step 3:  Cook aforementioned fresh food.

Step 4: Get off the couch and work out (if only during commercial breaks! :p)

Now I don’t know about you but I find step 2 the most difficult! Eating fresh organic food means going to a store other than the Billa around the corner. I used to go to Denn’s, Maran Vegan, Merkur, and DM all regularly and often in one day just to get the groceries for the week! This is aside from my weekly farmer’s market trips.

I would take my handy dandy shopping trolley with me a la Omi for my back’s sake but it was still time consuming and annoying.

Enter new internship, enter less time. :/

Now, that is me being spoiled because I live either walking distance or two ubahn stops away from all of the above mentioned stores. Who wants to take the ubahn to go food shopping though? What are those who live outside of Vienna supposed to do?

Enter the Biohof (Organic Farm).

Adamah Biohof  among others delivers farm fresh, local, and imported organic produce to your door. Yes! Your door.

Each district/region has a set delivery day. For instance, mine is Tuesday and I always have to place my order for the following week by Friday noon.

You can order once, you can oder weekly- that is up to you. You can even set up an automated order.

image

When you go to http://www.adamah.at click on the webshop at the top to see what their selection is. They have almost everything you need right down to organic cleaning products. This is my order for next week:

image

The first half of the order is things I picked. I know I will need avocados and bananas for smoothies every week so I always add those. My husband is obsessed with Joseph Brot (the very best in Vienna! Post to follow) so I order it from here and skip the one hour wait at their bakery. He is also not a vegan so I will often order eggs and cheese for him from here too (although cheese is really best from the market in the Freyung).

The bottom half is the contents of a medium size fruit and veggies box revealed! Adamah will usually reveal what is in the boxes on a Thursday. Usually you won’t know and it is a surprise what you will get in the category you ordered. Notes on something you absolutely shouldn’t get are allowed though. :)

Here are some example boxes my sister and I have gotten recently:

image

This is my sister’s order and it was 24.90€.  Delivery is free after 20€ (it’s like organic farm amazon. ha ha)

image

This is an order of about 50€. I got a large regional box, avocados, bananas, a vegetable scrubbing brush, eggs, 2 spaghetti squash, 1 butternut squash, and a pomegranate. The walnuts were part of the regional box and they are SO good!

* Last but not least the picture at the very top of this post is all of the contents of what I got this week. It was an order of 36.74€ and it included: 1 basis kistl, 2 avocados,  1k bananas, ginger, salad of the week, 1kilo joseph bread, and 250g gouda cheese. So almost all of those fruits and veggies (Yes! There is an acorn squash in there!) were in the basis kistl (box) which costs 19€. All my add ins cost less than 18€.

As you can imagine- these orders basically take care of the food shopping. :) I still go to DM to buy beans and grains. Once in a while (like once a month! Max!) I will need something small from Denn’s or Maran but I have lost my foursquare mayorship in both! ;) I pick up onions, garlic, and any other random veg I might still need at the farmer’s market when I go on Fridays. It is still a tradition I really enjoy.

So consider saving yourself time, money (I definitely spend more on veggies at the store), and your back and maybe placing an order and supporting our local farms today! Deadline is at noon.

Btw. Did you notice how there is no plastic packaging? Love it!

Give it a try! I am sure you will love the selection, quality, and above all convenience as much as I do. :D

Love,

Mariana

p.s. There are many different farms to order from! I have tried a bunch and Adamah is so far my pick because they deliver to my district on a Tuesday. For a list of other farms click on this link: http://www.stadtbekannt.at/de/essen-und-trinken/gut-zu-essen/die-bio-kiste.html

Those outside of Vienna needing help finding a farm that delivers to them (there is one for sure!) feel free to write your area on the FB page and I will help you track it down!

Farmer’s Market 101 (Best of Vienna)

The only place to get kale- fresh beautiful just like in California kale- is at the Freyung organic farmer’s market that takes place every Friday and Saturday from 10:00-18:00.

As you can see it is SUPER easy to get to. A short walk from either Herrengasse or Stephansplatz.

Once you get there go here first:

This is one of two fruit and veg stands in the Freyung (often the only one) and it is also the best! Now, I went there yesterday.. saw a huge crowd.. throughout to myself “whatevs, I’ll start with a Sturm!” So off I go and start enjoying artisinal treats over a Sturm and what happens when I return? The cute farmer (single ladies- it is worth a trip for that!) tells me that oddly enough tons of people wanted kale and they were out! They promised to bring more today. :) My dad who was with me for the sake of Sturm and farm fresh cheese (he claims it is the best EVER and he would know) then informs me that maybe posting on FB was not such a good idea. :p

So yes, go to the veggie stand first!

Once you are stocked up on inexpensive organic fruits and veggies for the week. Take a look around and have some fun!

Some tips:

The best strum is  in the wine place across from the veggie stand (left hand side from where I am standing in this pic).. I am sorry to say it is way better than the stand across from it (which has really good juice btw!).

The best cheese (I have had  a cheese connoisseur confirm this) like EVER is in the stand practically attached to the salami stand (which, meat eaters, I hear has the very best salami). A lovely lady will stand there with you and in wonderful patent English will give you samples of everything you want and make a plate if you so wish. They are also super knowledgable as to what was made with animal cultures and what is vegetarian. The nicest sales people ever.

That said everyone in the market is nice!

The crowning glory and the highlight of my friday afternoon stroll is always this:

Simply Raw Bakery! https://www.facebook.com/simplyrawbakery

The name bakery is a joke as everything is raw. Everything is also gluten free, vegan, and refined sugar free. This is the definition of a healthy guilt free treat! They also have gluten free granola that I love.

Try the Sacherwürfel- just try it! It is SO delicious and you will never in a million years will guess it’s raw or vegan. I’m going to need you to trust me on this one. ;)

Once your shopping and tasting is done there are a few places to go! Have a coffee at cafe central and enjoy this delicious plate of pumpkin risotto:(only 7.80!)

I believe it was dairy free actually.

There are other places nearby such as Freshii but I will save those for another day. Now, should you decide to go home and cook with your fresh produce may I suggest this:

Miso Sweet Potato and Broccoli Bowl over kale and quinoa.

Smitten kitchen who the recipe is from has better pics!

Happy shopping, happy cooking, and happy Sturm drinking! :D

Anonymous asked: Hey! Sorry, can't find how to post a comment at a post so I'll just a here. The Boheme - is it non-smoker or does it a least have a real(!) non-smoking section (=not right next to the smokers where all the smoke will continually whaft over)? This is one of the most important infos for people and 90% of the restaurants don't have the info on their homepage just like 90% of the reviewers never mention it. If it's smoker only I don't care how good their food is.

Dear Anon,

Thank you for your question! I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke and have never noticed it in La Boheme. I think it is too small to have a non smoking section (although there is a separate spot in the back)  and so the whole restaurant ends up being non smoking due to the latest laws requiring all restaurants without proper separation to just be non smoking. I have never been there and it is smoky. I can tell you that! It has also never been very full because most don’t seem to know about it. So I believe you will be fine. I will make sure to mention this about a restaurant in future reviews, but since cigarette smoke makes me sick- I never recommend a restaurant that doesn’t have proper separation/no smoking at all.

Love,

Mariana

Best in Vienna: Budget Lunch

La Boheme in Spittelberg

image

Everyone, this is my biggest restaurant secret and I am always hesitant to tell people about it because it is SO amazing I don’t want it to get filled up! La Boheme- a gorgeous gourmet restaurant in gorgeous Spittelberg where main courses run around 20 euros per dish- has a lunch menu daily (yes! even weekends!) for 8,99. No joke. This is THE La Boheme where opera stars like to go and hang out after their shows. The signed pictures on the wall are proof. ;)

This picturesque and romantic location serves up gourmet food on a pauper’s budget everyday from 11-16:00. The lunch menus are always 3 courses and there is always a vegetarian and a meat version. Now trust me when I say this food is good. I have eaten there several times, back when I was a meat eater and since then. Almost if not everything is homemade right down to the parpadelle noodles. I have often gone where there was one thing on the menu that didn’t sound so great and it always turns out to be amazing. The celery cream soup is out of this world and even celery haters love it.

An appetizer, main course, and dessert for 8,99 is always amazing- but a gourmet appetizer, main course, and dessert for 8,99 is just epic! This is by far the best lunch deal in all of Vienna and should be checked out by visitors and locals alike.

I have kept this secret to myself for two years and enjoyed delicious gourmet food in a partially empty restaurant long enough. It is time to share.

So here you go, my biggest secret revealed. To check out the weekly menu go here: http://www.boheme.at/menu.html

I will allow the pictures above to do the rest of the talking. Apologies for the bad lighting! This is a very pretty and romantic place and hence kind of dark!

Love,

Mariana

Work it!

As many nice posts as I may have planned regarding fun things to do in the summer, the weather simply does not want to play along!

So I will put those off to another day and talk to you about my new love!

I have been working out almost daily for about 4 months now and the results have been nothing short of amazing! I finally found what works for me after trying SO many different things. I would like to share with you my tactics and maybe you can find something that would make working out work for you! We can eat as healthy as we want to but unless we move our bodies- we will never get the full effect.

I know, I know, I wish eating healthy was all it took too! I did so much whining and denial about this, spare yourself. Just do it as nike would say. ;)

Disclaimer: I am not a physician! So consult your doctor before starting workout programs, bla bla bla. I have to say this.

1) 10 minutes counts!! Don’t dispute the effect of a 10 minute workout. There are such great options out there free on youtube. Just get up 10 minutes earlier and do something before you hop in the shower (links to some of my fave workouts will be at the bottom).

2) Work out in the morning. By now I have learned to have my workout outfit next to the bed. I wake up and I change in to workout clothes. Done. Now I am dressed and I HAVE to work out. I’ll drink some water while I pick out what I want to do that day. If I am feeling very unmotivated- I will just do 10 minutes. Otherwise I do 15, 20, or 30. You will see results even if you only work out 10 minutes a day. I did! Just do the right workouts.

3) Work out at home. I used to do hot yoga which I loved- my knees didn’t though. Neither did my wallet. Did I hop on the bus and go over there lugging my yoga mat the minute it rained or snowed? NO. Also I got the flu and could’t go- what a waste of 80€/month. Before that I was at a lovely gym in the 7th- hated lugging my stuff there. I was also at Holmes Place before that. It’s lovely, they have a steam room, I still hated lugging my stuff there. All you need to workout at home are some small weights (12€ at Intersport!) and a yoga mat. Done. No more expenses, no more carrying stuff around, and the comfort of your own shower with all your organic shampoos. ;)

4) Switch it up. The past months I have switched around between blogilates (an excellent Pilates program free online), body rock, whatever looks good on youtube (Musical dance anyone? Anyone? It was fun!), and popsugar fitness. Youtube has whatever you fancy! Are you mad at someone? Maybe today is kickboxing day then! It helps! ;)

5) Do it everyday. It is easier to just be in the habit of doing it everyday than to have set days in the week where stuff can come up. Trust me. 10 minutes everyday that you actually do is more effective than 60 minutes 3x per week where you don’t even do it half the time. If you do it in the morning you are done. Nothing else can get in your way that day because it’s done! Feel free to take Sundays off if you want.

6) Choose your pace. I can’t stress this enough. If 10 minutes is all you can do- start there. It’s fine. If you are only comfortable with yoga right now- then do yoga. There are no rules. If a video is too hard do half the reps. Start where you can and work your way up at a pace you are comfortable. Working out should not be something you dread.

7) Move more throughout the day. Maybe get off a stop early and walk, or take the stairs once in a while. These little extra movements make a difference.

8) Work your whole body. Abs and legs on Mondays, arms on Tuesdays, only do whole body workouts. Whatever you like- just make sure you’re working everything.

Last but not least:

9) Make it fun! Once in a while my siblings and I like to go to the park with towels and work out there. We also play badminton, and bike around. It is all exercise. Have fun with it!

Link time! I will post links of some of my favorite workouts. They will be a bit random. They will feature girls- guys, that is no excuse for you not to do it! It should be motivation really. Ha ha.

So first my current love. It is not free but it is awesome! I feel relaxed and zen when I do these workouts. I love the layout and that it works with apple tv airplay. Also I have been wanting to try Barre for a really long time now and they don’t have it in Austria. The online studio works for me!

As you can see, you can pick how much time you have and what kind of workout you want to do. It work’s seamlessly and the workouts are amazing! To see if Barre is something you like try this 10 minute workout. You can also try a 30 minute workout here.  There are two or three more 10 minute ones. Just type Barre 3 into youtube and they will come up.

Another love of mine is Blogilates. Cassey Ho is such a sweet trainer and really kicks you into shape! The minute you start wanting to quit and curse she starts talking about nail polish colors and distracts you. It’s kinda weird actually. I love it though! I think she’s super cute. Some of my favorites of hers are:

Spring Fling

 Gangam Style Cardio

Pop Kicks

Now if you are a guy reading this and you want a “manly” workout. You can try www.bodyrock.tv  do the one week challenge to get started. Bodyrock can be done in 6-12 minutes a day with serious results but it does require some more equipment. An ex bodyrock trainer Zuzka has some videos on youtube but mostly up for subscription like Barre 3. They are very intense. If you are into that- have fun!

Last but not least, I love pop sugar fitness on youtube. They have a 10 minute series where celebrity trainers come and do a segment. Get Beyonce’s abs or whatever. These are the videos I do when I only want to do 10 minutes and I need a serious ass kicking. You will be sore, you will be sweaty, it will feel like 30 minutes instead of ten. But at the end of it you will be done and feel amazing! My favorite part about these is that there is a countdown timer at the top lefthand corner so you know there are only 3 minutes to go. Very motivating and keeps me with it! some popsugar favorites are (Partially because they are standing. Sometimes I am not in the mood for mat work) :

Victoria’s Secret Model Workout - by a real VS model trainer (Heidi Klum’s!)

Belly Fat Blast- by Pink’s trainer. She will really work you in 10 minutes!

Selena Gomez Abs (Pop Physique)- if you only have 4 minutes- do this.

10 minute no equipment workout- you need nothing for this! You can do it anywhere! Just do it!!

So I hope the above links will get you started and moving! A trick to find new kinds of workouts is to search through amazon.com and see what the highest reviewed fitness videos are. There is something there for everyone. Make sure you are doing what works for your body. I for one don’t handle stress well and my body reacts much more to pilates/yoga/ballet workouts than to hardcore cardio. I like zumba but it doesn’t do much for me! Figure out what your type is!

Most of all remember: we work out so we can eat real, clean food and ditch the stupid diets forever!

I don’t know about you but I will choose 10 minutes of working out and then eating what I like (clean and healthy of course) than dieting and starving myself to be skinny as opposed to fit!

The healthy chocolate cookies I had for breakfast were so good too. ;)

Happy sweating!

Maran Vegan

Hope. Lately a lot of developments have happened in Vienna that give me hope in the future of our world. Maybe we can still use this earth in 50 years.

First there were sightings of biodegradable cutlery to go in Merkur and Spar, then Veganista opened- vegan and biodegradable containers, and now a Vegan grocery store opened- Maran Vegan

image

Stefan Maran, the man behind Vienna’s first organic supermarkets, is also the man behind Vienna’s first Vegan supermarket. He mentioned in this interview that he simply does not like to be second in line!

image

When you walk in you are greeted by a cheery display and it’s immediately clear that Stefan Maran knows what he is doing! Little details like the packing table being right by the cashier or how staff walks around with carts to give out make the experience that much more enjoyable. Check it out! A bulk bin! Sweet.

The store is 80% organic and the knowledgable staff can point out what is and isn’t. The produce is 100% organic. The non organic part is basically limited to the cheese substitutes of which there are plenty! The store houses only vegan foods and Mr. Maran allows no funny business! Highly processed junk is simply not allowed in.

image

The store hosts a cozy coffeeshop in cooperation with the famous Hollerei- a vegetarian restaurant in the 15th. There is an assortment of treats right down to cake pops and a daily lunch menu. It was not gluten free so I could not try it but it sure looked good!

I decided on a coffee and when I asked if it was organic the answer was, “of course!” I love that. You know how it is the simple things that really win one over? The coffee came with organic fully raw cane sugar! I’m not going to lie, I joined the long line of people signing up for a member card after that!

The prices were comparable to the organic supermarket except for the jarred beans. They were at least 50 cents more and I will still have to visit Denn’s thanks to that. However, Maran Vegan has everything else someone eating clean and vegetarian needs on a regular basis and it will for sure be my main grocery store now.

I would also like to point out that if anyone out there is considering veganism, simply switching to shopping here makes it easy peasy! They have everything you might miss! Maybe give it a try for 20 days and rule out a lactose/dairy intolerance. :)

Make time in your calendars to check this place out! There is a 5% store opening discount until tomorrow.

Love,

Mariana

L!fe- you’re doing it right!

Greetings from surprisingly sunny London!
The hubby and I are here for the weekend to see a show we have been dying to see- Derren Brown!
As sad as I am to be missing be Biorama fair in MQ this weekend- the BBQ Kale chips I just ate in L!fe sure did make up for it!

London is just a hotspot of hipster health food joints and I love it! Überfood on every street corner!
L!fe is found in The Old Truman Brewery in London on Brick Lane. Brick Lane is the place to be and stay if you are at all into vintage markets, awesome food, and an earthy hipster vibe.

L!fe embodies everything cool about the neighborhood. The food is pure and clean with plenty of raw and gluten free options. Organic smoothies, juices, and coffees are a given!
Take in a yoga or Pilates class while you are there (they have Hot Yoga Barre!!) or chill in the lovely garden.

Everything we ate was delicious and left us wanting more!
FYI London locals- L!fe has a lunch menu for 5,50£ every weekday.

So if you are planning a trip to the land of high tea, make sure to add a visit to L!fe to your to do list!
